The Narasimha temple of Joshimath, the town where the Badrinath image spends the winter. It is the usual identification of the Divya Desam Thiruppiruthi, though some place that shrine elsewhere in the Himalaya.
HistoryDocumented history
Joshimath stands above the Alaknanda on the road to Badrinath. Adi Shankara is said to have founded Jyotirmath, one of his four monasteries, here, and when snow closes Badrinath each winter its festival image is brought down to the Narasimha temple and worshipped here until spring. Thirumangai Alvar's Thiruppiruthi is generally identified with this town, though the identification is not certain. In January 2023 land subsidence cracked houses across Joshimath and many families were moved, putting the town's future in question.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The image of Narasimha here is said to have been worshipped by Shankara himself. Vishnu is believed to come down from Badri to stay with Narasimha during the snowbound months.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Local belief holds that the left wrist of the Narasimha image is slowly growing thinner. When it breaks, the mountains Nara and Narayana will close the road to Badrinath, and the god will be worshipped instead at Bhavishya Badri.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The winter journey of the god from Badri to Joshimath shows a shrine that moves with the seasons and stays close to the people who live below the snow line.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Joshimath is the base for pilgrims and trekkers bound for Badrinath, Hemkund and the Valley of Flowers, and the subsidence crisis has made it a symbol of the strain that roads and building put on the Himalaya.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
