A group of nine Narasimha shrines in the Nallamala forest of Andhra Pradesh, where Vishnu is said to have burst from a pillar as the man-lion to save the boy Prahlada. It is the seat of the Ahobila Matha.

HistoryDocumented history

The Divya Desam spreads across Upper and Lower Ahobilam and the forest between them, where nine shrines of Narasimha (the Nava Narasimha) stand along streams and rock faces. Thirumangai Alvar sang of the hard climb to the hill he called Singavel Kundram. The Ahobila Matha, one of the main Sri Vaishnava monasteries, traces its founding here to Adivan Satakopa Jeeyar in 1398. The Vijayanagara kings gave the lower temple much of its present form, and Krishnadevaraya is recorded as visiting and making gifts in the early 16th century.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The demon king Hiranyakashipu could not be killed by man or beast, by day or night, indoors or outdoors. When he struck a pillar to mock his son Prahlada's faith, Vishnu burst out as Narasimha, half man and half lion, and killed him at dusk on the threshold, on his lap. The Ugra Stambha, a split rock on the hill, is shown as that pillar, and the gods are said to have cried 'Aho balam', 'what strength', giving the place its name.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Narasimha is said to have married Chenchu Lakshmi, a girl of the Chenchu forest people, and the Chenchus still take part in the temple's festivals as the god's in-laws.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Narasimha is the god who keeps his word to the devotee at any cost, breaking every rule of form and time to protect Prahlada. His fierce form here is softened by his marriage to a forest girl.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Pilgrims trek through the forest to all nine shrines, and the Chenchu link keeps an old bond between the temple and the tribal people of the Nallamala hills.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
