One of the largest temples in Karnataka, dedicated to Shiva as Nanjundeshwara, 'the god who swallowed poison'. It is known for healing, for the Wodeyars' patronage and for an emerald linga said to be a gift of Tipu Sultan.
HistoryDocumented history
Nanjangud grew around the temple on the river Kapila. The Wodeyar kings of Mysore made it one of their main shrines and added the long pillared corridors and the tall eastern gopura. Its Dodda Jatre, with five chariots, draws huge crowds.
Sthala PuranaTradition
When the gods and asuras churned the ocean, the poison halahala rose first. Shiva drank it to save the world and held it in his throat, which turned blue. Here he is worshipped as Nanjunda, the one who swallowed poison; the sage Gautama is said to have installed the linga.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The temple's reputation for healing gave rise to Nanjangud's medicinal tradition: the town's famous tooth powder and Ayurvedic preparations were tied to the god's power over poison and disease.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Shiva who takes the poison into himself is the model of a leader who bears suffering so that others may live.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The Nanjangud rasabale banana, grown around the town, is a GI-tagged product, and the temple anchors the town's economy and identity.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
