HistoryDocumented history
The temple has fine sculpture and a hill shrine, Malaimel Nambi, in the forest above. Nammalvar's parents are said to have prayed here for a child, and tradition says Thirumangai Alvar ended his days nearby.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Vishnu as Varaha told the earth goddess here of the merit of singing his praise, which is the setting for the Kaisika Purana.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Nampaduvan, a singer kept outside the temple because of his birth, was caught by a brahmarakshasa on his way to sing on Ekadasi night. He promised to return to be eaten after singing, and kept his word. Moved, the demon asked for the merit of his song and was freed. The god's flagstaff is said to have moved aside so Nampaduvan could see him from outside. The story is performed in the temple every Kaisika Ekadasi as the Kaisika Natakam.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Nampaduvan's honesty, and a god who moves to let an outcaste see him, are remembered as a rebuke to pride of birth.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The Kaisika Natakam, a drama revived in recent decades, is staged in the temple through the night of Kaisika Ekadasi.
