The ruins of Nalanda, the great Buddhist monastery and university of ancient India, founded under the Guptas in the 5th century and supported by the Palas. Its temples, stupas and monasteries are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Scholars from China, Korea, Tibet and Southeast Asia came to study here. The ruins include rows of monasteries and the great stupa-temple of Sariputta (Site 3). A new Nalanda University was opened nearby in the 21st century.
