A temple where the goddess takes first place: in procession Vanjulavalli walks ahead of Vishnu. Its stone Garuda is famous for seeming to grow heavier as it is carried out of the temple.

HistoryDocumented history

Tradition credits the temple to the early Chola king Kochenga, known otherwise as a builder of Shiva temples. Thirumangai Alvar sang more than a hundred verses about it and received initiation here. The goddess's precedence gives the place its name, Nachiyar Kovil.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The sage Medhavi prayed for Lakshmi as his daughter, and she appeared under a vanjula tree. Vishnu came to marry her and agreed that she would rule here and he would follow her.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The stone Garuda (Kal Garudan) is carried out in procession twice a year. Bearers say it grows heavier with each step out of the shrine, needing first four, then many more people, and lighter on its return.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A god who walks behind his consort turns the usual order around and honours the goddess as the giver of grace.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The Kal Garuda Sevai draws large crowds, and the village is known for its brass lamp-making.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
