A modern Buddhist temple at Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon in the Deer Park. Built by Anagarika Dharmapala's Maha Bodhi Society and opened in 1931, it holds relics of the Buddha and murals by the Japanese painter Kosetsu Nosu.

HistoryDocumented history

Sarnath was a major Buddhist centre for over 1,500 years, until it was abandoned in the 12th century. The new temple, built by Dharmapala of Sri Lanka, revived Sarnath as a living pilgrimage site.
