A forest shrine of the Koya tribal goddesses Sammakka and her daughter Saralamma, who are said to have fought the Kakatiya army. The biennial Medaram Jatara draws over a crore of people, one of the largest tribal gatherings in the world.
HistoryDocumented history
There is no temple: the goddesses are kept in the forest and brought by Koya priests to raised platforms (gaddes) for the four days of the jatara, every two years in Magha. Pilgrims offer jaggery equal to their own weight, called bangaram (gold). Government arrangements for the festival now span the whole forest.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Koya hunters found a baby girl among tigers in the forest and raised her as Sammakka. She married a Koya chief, Pagididda Raju. When the Kakatiya king demanded taxes in a drought, the family fought; Saralamma and the menfolk died, and Sammakka, wounded, vanished into the Chilakalagutta hill, leaving a box of vermilion.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The stream Jampanna Vagu is said to have turned red with the blood of Sammakka's son Jampanna, and pilgrims bathe in it before worship.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The goddesses are heroines who stood up for their people against unjust power; worship here honours resistance and community.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Medaram is the largest expression of Adivasi religion in India and is central to Koya identity. Its scale raises questions of forest protection and of keeping tribal priests in charge.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
