HistoryDocumented history

Mandore, about 9 km north of Jodhpur, was the capital of the Pratiharas of Mandavyapura and later of the Rathores of Marwar, until Rao Jodha moved the capital to Jodhpur in 1459. Ruins of the old fort and of temples of the Pratihara period survive on the hill.

In the gardens below, the Rathore rulers built large memorials called devals, in the form of temples with Nagara spires, over the cremation sites of their predecessors, from the 17th century onward. The deval of Maharaja Ajit Singh, of the early 18th century, is the largest. The gardens also have the Hall of Heroes, with large painted figures of folk heroes and deities carved from rock, and the Shrine of 33 crore gods.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The devals are tall red sandstone buildings in the form of Nagara temples, with spires, carved pillars and halls, standing in a row in the gardens. The Hall of Heroes is a long gallery of brightly painted figures carved from a single rock face, and the Shrine of 33 crore gods holds painted images of many deities.

On the hill above are the remains of the old fort and of Pratihara-period temples.
