A hilltop temple above the Krishna river where Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna and the goddess as Bhramaramba. It is unusual in being both one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the Shakti Peethas, and inscriptions show it was already a sacred site in the 2nd century.

HistoryDocumented history

Srisailam has been a pilgrimage centre for close to two thousand years. The walled complex covers about two hectares, with four gopurams and walls 8.5 m high, and the Mallikarjuna shrine is the oldest part. Pilgrims walk down 852 steps to the Krishna, here called Patala Ganga, for water to bathe the linga.

Sthala PuranaTradition

When Shiva and Parvati arranged for Ganesha to marry first, their son Kartikeya left Kailasa in anger for the Krauncha mountain. His parents followed to pacify him and stayed nearby on the Srisaila hill. Shiva remained as Mallikarjuna and Parvati as Bhramaramba, the goddess of the bees. Like all Jyotirlingas, the shrine also recalls Shiva appearing as an endless pillar of light.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The name is explained by the jasmine (mallika) with which the linga was worshipped. Tradition counts Srisailam among the Shakti Peethas as the place where Sati's neck fell, and Bhramaramba as one of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A family quarrel ends with the parents going to the child: Srisailam presents the divine as close and responsive. Shiva and Shakti are worshipped together here as equals, a reminder that awareness and energy cannot be separated.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Srisailam sits inside the Nallamala forests near the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, so its crowds and conservation must coexist. Its Telugu, Kannada and Tamil pilgrims make it a meeting point of South Indian cultures.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
