Living temple

A forest hill shrine of Male Mahadeshwara, a Veerashaiva saint of the 15th century worshipped as a form of Shiva. Pilgrims walk long distances through the forests of the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border to reach him.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple stands in a wildlife sanctuary with elephants and tigers, on hills once known as the haunt of the brigand Veerappan. The saint is the hero of a long oral epic sung by the Kamsale singers of the Soliga and Lingayat communities, who perform it with brass cymbals.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Mahadeshwara came from Srishaila as a boy saint, riding a tiger. He defeated the tyrant Sravanasura, freed the people of the hills, and made the forest his home, where he still guards his devotees.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The Male Mahadeshwara epic tells how the saint won the devotion of the forest-dwelling Soligas, and many of the temple's customs come from them.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The saint who rides a tiger and lives with forest people shows the Veerashaiva ideal that the divine is reached by devotion, not by birth or ritual rank.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The shrine is a meeting point of tribal and Lingayat cultures, and its forest setting makes it a place where pilgrimage and wildlife protection must share the hills.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
