HistoryDocumented history
Bikaner was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, a son of Rao Jodha of Jodhpur. The Laxminath temple, in the old city near the great Bhandasar Jain temple, was built under his son Rao Lunkaran (r. about 1505-1526) and is counted as the oldest Hindu temple of the city.
The rulers of Bikaner regarded Laxminath, Vishnu with Lakshmi, as the true sovereign of the state and themselves as his ministers. A royal procession led by the head of the former ruling family still pays homage here on major festivals. The temple was renovated and richly decorated under later rulers, and is known locally as the temple of the Nagar Seth, 'the chief merchant of the city'.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple stands on a raised platform with a Nagara spire over the sanctum and a pillared hall, built of the local red and cream sandstone. Its doors and interiors are decorated with silver work and paintings, much of it added in later centuries.
The images of Laxminath and Lakshmi stand together in the sanctum. A small Ganesha shrine and other subsidiary shrines stand in the courtyard.
PhilosophyInterpretation
A king who calls God the true ruler reminds himself that power is held in trust.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple remains the centre of Bikaner's Vaishnava festivals and of the former royal family's ceremonies.

Documented history
Documented history
Interpretation
