The goddess temple at Meerapur in Prayagraj, near the meeting of the Ganga and Yamuna, regarded as the Prayag Shakti Peetha where Sati's fingers fell. The Ashtadasha hymn calls the goddess here Madhaveshwari; the nearby Alopi Devi temple also claims the seat.
HistoryDocumented history
Prayag, at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the unseen Saraswati, has been a place of pilgrimage since Vedic times. The Lalita Devi temple, rebuilt in modern times with a 108-foot tower on a Sri Yantra plan, stands near the Yamuna with the Laliteshwar Mahadev shrine beside it. At the Alopi Devi temple nearby there is no image at all; devotees worship a wooden doli.
Sthala PuranaTradition
When Sati gave up her life at her father Daksha's sacrifice, Shiva wandered the worlds carrying her body in grief, and Vishnu's discus cut it into pieces. Wherever a part fell, a Shakti Peetha arose. At Prayag the fingers of Sati's hand are said to have fallen. Tradition says the sage Bharadwaja worshipped the goddess here and the Pandavas visited.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The Alopi Devi temple's name means 'the one who vanished': by one story it was the last place a part of Sati fell and disappeared; by another, a bride vanished from her palanquin here and came to be worshipped as the goddess.
PhilosophyInterpretation
A goddess known by her absence at Alopi and by her fullness as Lalita at Meerapur: Prayag shows the divine both as presence and as mystery.
Meaning todayInterpretation
During the Kumbh and Magh Mela, millions of pilgrims visit Prayag's goddess temples. The rival claims show how sacred geography is kept alive by local memory rather than a single authority.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
