HistoryDocumented history
Naimisharanya, on the Gomti in Sitapur district, is one of the oldest pilgrimage places of north India. The Mahabharata and the Puranas describe it as the forest where the sage Suta recited the Puranas to thousands of rishis gathered for a long sacrifice.
The Lalita Devi temple is its main goddess shrine. Many lists count it as a Shakti Peetha, where Sati's heart is said to have fallen, though the lists differ and some place this peetha elsewhere. The present temple is modern.
Naimisharanya's other sacred places include the Chakra Tirtha pool, the Vyasa Gaddi, Hanuman Garhi and the Devaraja temple, counted among the 108 Divya Desams.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple is a modern building with a main shrine of the goddess, in the centre of the cluster of shrines around the Chakra Tirtha.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The sages asked Brahma for a place to perform a long sacrifice. He rolled a wheel (chakra) and told them to settle where its rim (nemi) fell; it fell here, creating the Chakra Tirtha, and the place was named Naimisha.
