The temple is one of the best-known shrines of the Sindhudurg coast. Pilgrims bathe in the sea before darshan, and the Mahashivaratri fair draws crowds from across the Konkan. Rock-cut figures in caves on the nearby hill are linked by local people to the old shrine.
