The temple of the virgin goddess Kanyakumari at the southern tip of India, where three seas meet. She stands with a rosary, waiting for Shiva who never came to marry her. Some traditions count it among the Shakti Peethas.

HistoryDocumented history

The cape and its goddess were known to ancient travellers; the Greek Periplus of the Erythraean Sea mentions pilgrims bathing here in the 1st century CE. The temple was long under the Travancore kings, and its customs follow Kerala ways in some respects. In 1892 Swami Vivekananda worshipped the goddess and meditated on a rock offshore; the Vivekananda Rock Memorial now stands there. The district joined Tamil Nadu in 1956.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The demon Banasura could be killed only by a virgin. Parvati took birth here as Kanya Kumari and resolved to marry Shiva of Suchindram. The wedding was set for midnight, but the sage Narada, knowing the demon had to die first, crowed like a cock. Shiva, thinking dawn had come, turned back. The goddess remained a virgin and killed Banasura, and the rice and grains for the wedding feast, it is said, became the coloured sands of the beach.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Her diamond nose ring is said to have shone so brightly that sailors mistook it for a lighthouse and wrecked their ships, so the eastern door facing the sea is opened only on a few days a year. Some Shakti Peetha lists say Sati's back fell here.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The goddess who waits forever, unmarried and alone, is a picture of single-minded tapas. She is not incomplete; her power comes from her focus.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Pilgrims come to see sunrise and sunset over the sea and to bathe at the meeting of three seas before worshipping the goddess. The temple, the Vivekananda Rock and the Thiruvalluvar statue together make Kanyakumari one of India's best-known places.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
