A Western Ghats shrine where Subrahmanya is worshipped together with the serpent king Vasuki, who took refuge under him. It is the main place in Karnataka for rites against sarpa dosha, the affliction believed to follow harm done to snakes.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple sits in rainforest at the foot of Kumara Parvatha. The Kumaradhara and Darpana Teertha rivers meet nearby, and pilgrims bathe before worship. In recent decades it has become one of the highest-earning temples in Karnataka.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Vasuki, chased by Garuda, hid in a cave at Kukke and did penance to Shiva. Shiva told him that Subrahmanya would dwell there and protect him forever. Subrahmanya then arrived after his war with the asuras and stayed, with Vasuki beside him.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The rite of Sarpa Samskara is performed for those who believe they or their ancestors harmed a snake; it follows the form of a funeral for the serpent. The Ashlesha Bali is offered on the day of the Ashlesha star, the serpent's star.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The serpent stands for kundalini, the energy coiled at the base of the spine, and Subrahmanya for the wisdom that raises it. Worship of snakes is also a reminder of the bond between people and the forest.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Snake worship on the Karnataka and Kerala coast has helped protect sacred groves (naga banas), which are now valued as pockets of biodiversity.
