The shrine at the place in Mathura where Krishna is believed to have been born in Kamsa's prison. Its temples were destroyed and rebuilt several times, and the site beside the Shahi Idgah is the subject of pending court cases.

HistoryDocumented history

Mathura was a great city by the last centuries BCE, and the Alvars sang of it as Vadamathurai, the northern Madurai. The temple at Krishna's birthplace was plundered by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1017. Bir Singh Deo Bundela built a large Keshavdev temple here in the early 17th century, and Aurangzeb had it pulled down in 1670 and the Shahi Idgah raised on part of the site. The present complex, with a shrine over the traditional prison cell, was built from the 1950s onward by the Shri Krishna Janmasthan Seva Sansthan. Suits claiming the Idgah land are now before the courts.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Kamsa, warned that his sister Devaki's eighth child would kill him, imprisoned her and her husband Vasudeva. Krishna was born at midnight in the cell; the guards fell asleep, the doors opened, and Vasudeva carried the baby across the flooded Yamuna to Gokul.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Mathura's people say the Yamuna rose to touch the infant's feet as Vasudeva crossed, and then fell back to let him pass.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The god born in a prison is a sign that the divine comes into the world where it is most needed, in the dark, among the oppressed.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Janmashtami at midnight draws vast crowds to Mathura and the whole Braj region, and the site's history makes it one of the most closely watched places of worship in India.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
