Living temple

A shrine of the goddess Mookambika on the Souparnika river below Kodachadri hill. Her emblem is a self-formed linga split by a golden line into Shiva and Shakti, and Adi Shankara is said to have installed her image. It draws large numbers of pilgrims from Kerala.

HistoryDocumented history

Kollur lies in the forested Western Ghats of coastal Karnataka. The temple grew under the Keladi Nayakas, whose gifts of jewels are still displayed on festival days. It is one of the seven Mukti Sthalas of the Parashurama Kshetra along the coast and a favourite of Malayali pilgrims, who regard the goddess as their own.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The demon Kaumasura won a boon of near-invincibility. The goddess struck him dumb (mooka) so that he could not ask for more, and he became Mookasura. She then killed him, and was called Mookambika, the mother who silenced the demon.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Adi Shankara asked the goddess to follow him to Kerala. She agreed on condition that he not look back; at Kollur he heard her anklets stop and turned, and she stayed there. The Chitramoola cave on Kodachadri is shown as his place of meditation.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The split linga shows that Shiva and Shakti, consciousness and power, are one reality in two aspects. As a goddess of speech and learning, she is approached for Vidyarambha, a child's first letters.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Thousands of children write their first letters here at Vijayadashami, and artists and musicians visit before major performances. The shrine links the cultures of Kerala and Karnataka across a state border.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
