A group of five ruined temples in the Thar desert near Barmer, the best preserved being the Someshwara temple of Shiva. Their richly carved walls make them among the finest Maru-Gurjara work in western Rajasthan.
HistoryDocumented history
Kiradu (ancient Kiratakupa) was a town of the Paramaras of the region. The Someshwara temple has lost its spire and most of its hall roof, but the base mouldings show elephants, horsemen, warriors and scenes from the epics.
Sthala PuranaTradition
No sthala purana is recorded for the site.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Local legend says a sage cursed the town after its people failed to care for his disciple, turning them to stone, and that anyone who stays at the temples after dark will also turn to stone. Visitors are still advised to leave by sunset.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Even in ruin, the temples show the order of the cosmos carved in stone, with life, war and devotion in their place below the shrine.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Kiradu is little visited and vulnerable; heritage groups have called for better protection and conservation.
