Twin hills with rock-cut caves made for Jain monks in the 2nd-1st century BCE, under the Kalinga king Kharavela, whose Hathigumpha inscription is a key source for early Indian history. A Digambara Jain temple on the summit of Khandagiri is still in worship.
HistoryDocumented history
Udayagiri has 18 caves and Khandagiri 15. The largest, the Rani Gumpha, has two storeys with long friezes of processions, hunts and dancers. The Hathigumpha ('elephant cave') inscription, in Brahmi, records Kharavela's campaigns, his public works and his gifts to Jain monks.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The hills were called Kumari Parvata in Kharavela's time. Jain tradition holds that the Tirthankaras' teachings were preached in Kalinga, and Mahavira himself is said to have visited.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Kharavela is said to have brought back to Kalinga a Jain image, the 'Kalinga Jina', that the Nandas had taken away; the inscription records it.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Simple cells cut for monks in the rainy season show the Jain path of renunciation; the king's inscription joins it to public duty.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The caves are among the most visited monuments of Bhubaneswar, and the Hathigumpha inscription remains central to the history of ancient India.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
