Ruined / monumentASI Monument of National Importance

One of the tallest Buddhist stupas in the world, a terraced brick mound in East Champaran excavated by the ASI from 1998. It marks where the Buddha is said to have given his begging bowl to the people of Vaishali.

HistoryDocumented history

The stupa rises in terraces with niches holding seated Buddha images, many headless. It is about 31 m high today. Much of it is still covered in vegetation.

Sthala PuranaTradition

No puranic story; Buddhist tradition says the Buddha, on his last journey, gave his bowl to the Licchavis of Vaishali here and asked them to return home.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The mound was long called Raja Ben ka Deura, the shrine of a local king, before it was recognised as a stupa.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The gift of the bowl teaches detachment and the parting of teacher and disciple.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Kesariya is part of Bihar's Buddhist circuit but still little visited.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
