A Jyotirlinga temple at about 3,583 m in the Garhwal Himalaya, open only from about April-May to November. It is part of the Chota Char Dham and Panch Kedar. The stone temple survived the 2013 Uttarakhand floods that devastated the town.
HistoryDocumented history
The Mahabharata does not name Kedarnath; the Skanda Purana (c. 7th-8th c.) mentions it, and by the 12th century it was a major pilgrimage centre, recorded in the Kritya-kalpataru. Who built the present stone temple, of large interlocking slabs, and when, is not known. In winter the deity's processional form moves to the Omkareshwar temple at Ukhimath.
Sthala PuranaTradition
After the Kurukshetra war the Pandavas sought Shiva to atone for killing their kin. Shiva avoided them and hid as a bull. When Bhima tried to catch him, the bull sank into the earth, leaving its hump at Kedarnath. The other parts appeared at the four other Panch Kedar temples.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The boulder that saved the temple in 2013 is now worshipped as Bhim Shila, and many devotees see it as divine protection.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The journey to Kedarnath is itself tapas, a hard climb that strips away comfort and pride. The Pandava story is about seeking forgiveness through effort.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The 2013 disaster made Kedarnath a symbol of the risks of unplanned building and mass tourism in a fragile Himalaya. It raises the question of how pilgrimage can continue sustainably.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
