A goddess temple on a rock in the middle of the Nandini river near Mangaluru. It is famous as the home of one of the oldest Yakshagana troupes, whose all-night performances are offered to the goddess as worship.
HistoryDocumented history
Kateel lies in the Tulu-speaking coast. The hereditary Asranna priest families serve the temple, and the troupes it sponsors perform Yakshagana through the dry season, with families booking a performance as a vow to the goddess.
Sthala PuranaTradition
A drought struck the land, and the sage Jabali went to bring the divine cow Kamadhenu to perform a sacrifice. Her daughter Nandini came instead and became the river. The demon Arunasura, protected from any two- or four-legged being, was killed by the goddess as a swarm of bees (bhramari), and she rose in the river as a linga at Kati-tala, the 'waist' of the river.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Kateel is said to be at the waist (kati) of the Nandini, which gives the place its name. Devotees offer jasmine and the temple's sweets, and stories tell of the goddess blessing performers who forgot their lines.
PhilosophyInterpretation
A goddess who wins as a swarm of tiny bees teaches that the many small and weak, united, can defeat the mightiest power.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Kateel keeps Yakshagana alive as a living ritual theatre, not only a stage art. The touring troupes give employment to hundreds of artists.
