The temple is reached by a flight of steps from the Godavari ghats and stands among the many shrines of Panchavati. It is visited by pilgrims to the Kumbh Mela at Nashik.

Shiva cut off one of Brahma's five heads and the skull (kapala) stuck to his hand. Nandi showed him the way to the Godavari at Ramkund, where he bathed and was freed. Because Nandi acted as his teacher, Shiva would not let him sit before him, and so the temple has no Nandi.
