The best-known Shiva temple of Chennai, in the old quarter of Mylapore. Its name recalls Parvati, who worshipped Shiva here in the form of a peahen. The 37 m eastern tower faces a large temple tank, and its Arupathu Moovar festival is the city's great procession.

HistoryDocumented history

Mylapore was a busy port in early centuries, and Sambandar sang of its Shiva temple in the 7th century. The present temple was built in the 16th century; tradition and some historians hold that the older shrine stood near the shore and was destroyed by the Portuguese. Its eastern tower, finished in 1906, overlooks one of the largest temple tanks in Chennai. The quarter around it, with its streets of shops and Carnatic music halls, is the heart of old Chennai.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Parvati asked Shiva to explain the meaning of the five-syllable mantra, but was distracted by a dancing peacock. Shiva cursed her to be born as a peahen. She came here as a peahen and worshipped him under the punnai tree until he restored her. The name Mylapore comes from mayil, 'peacock'.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The daughter of a devotee, Poompavai, died of a snakebite and her ashes were kept in a pot. When Sambandar came to Mylapore he sang a hymn and she rose alive from the ashes; the festival of the 63 saints recalls this.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Parvati's distraction and return through humble worship is a picture of the soul: even the divine mother learns that attention is the heart of devotion.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The Arupathu Moovar festival, when bronze images of the 63 Nayanmar saints are carried around the tank, draws huge crowds. The temple anchors Mylapore's living traditions of music, dance and Tamil devotion in a modern city.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
