Vijayawada (old Bezawada) has been a crossing of the Krishna since ancient times, and the hill holds inscriptions of several dynasties. The temple has grown into one of the richest in the state, with a flyover and ghat road built for festival crowds.

The sage Indrakila did penance and asked the goddess to live on his head; he became the hill Indrakeeladri and she settled there as Kanaka Durga after killing Mahishasura. Arjuna is said to have prayed to Shiva on this hill and won the Pashupata weapon after wrestling with Shiva in the form of a hunter (Kirata).
