A black-stone temple of Rama at Panchavati, where Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are said to have lived in exile. In 1930 B. R. Ambedkar led a satyagraha here for the right of Dalits to enter the temple.
HistoryDocumented history
Panchavati, on the Godavari, is one of the holy sites of the Ramayana and a site of the Kumbh Mela. Rangarao Odhekar, a Peshwa sardar, is said to have dreamt that the images lay in the river. The temple, with a spire about 21 m high, took about twelve years and many workers to build.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Panchavati, 'five banyan trees', is where Rama made his forest home. Here Lakshmana cut off the nose of the demoness Surpanakha, and from here Ravana carried Sita away, which gave Nashik ('nose') its name.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The images are of black stone, and so the god is called Kala Rama, 'black Rama'. The Sita Gufa cave nearby is shown as where Sita took shelter.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Rama is the ideal of dharma; the satyagraha asked whether a temple of the righteous king could keep any of his people out.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The 1930 satyagraha was a turning point in the Dalit movement; when it failed to open the temple, Ambedkar's turn away from temple entry towards political rights and, later, Buddhism followed.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation

Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
