Living templeDravida (South Indian)PallavaASI Monument of National Importance

The oldest structural temple in Kanchipuram, built in sandstone by the Pallava king Rajasimha around 700-728. Its walls are lined with small shrines and lively sculptures of Shiva in many forms, and it set the pattern for later Tamil temples.

HistoryDocumented history

Rajasimha, among the greatest Pallava kings, built the temple in soft sandstone on a granite base. The vimana rises in a pyramid of storeys, and the courtyard wall holds 58 small shrines, each with sculpture. Traces of Pallava paintings survive in some. Inscriptions record the names of the king and his queen Rangapataka. When the Chalukya king Vikramaditya II took Kanchi, he did not loot the temple and instead left an inscription praising it. The temple's plan influenced later temples, including Thanjavur.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The temple has no long purana of its own. Its name means Lord of Kailasa, and the whole building is meant as Shiva's mountain home.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Pilgrims crawl through a narrow passage around the sanctum, entering on one side and coming out the other; it is said that whoever does so will not be born again. A Pallava-era tunnel is said to have connected the temple to the palace.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The sculptures show Shiva as dancer, ascetic, husband and destroyer of demons. The temple makes the many sides of one god visible at once.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Away from the city's busy temples, Kailasanathar is a quiet place to see early Tamil art. It is a key monument for anyone tracing how the South Indian temple took shape.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
