A Vishnu temple on the bank of Joysagar, one of the largest man-made tanks in India. The Ahom king Rudra Singha built the tank and the temple in memory of his mother, Joymoti, who died under torture rather than reveal where her husband was hiding.
HistoryDocumented history
Joysagar was dug in 1697 and is said to cover more than 300 acres, including its banks. The Joy Dol stands on the southern bank with smaller shrines nearby, and the whole group is a protected monument. Like other Ahom temples, it is built of brick with carved terracotta and stone panels, and the walls show figures of gods and animals.
