The goddess temple at Alampur, beside the Chalukya-era Navabrahma temples, where Jogulamba is shown seated on a corpse with a scorpion, frog and lizard on her head. Destroyed in 1390, it was rebuilt on its old site in 2005 and the original image reinstalled.
HistoryDocumented history
Alampur was a major Badami Chalukya centre, with nine Navabrahma Shiva temples of the 7th and 8th centuries. The Jogulamba shrine was destroyed in 1390, and for more than six centuries the goddess was worshipped in a corner of the Bala Brahmeswara temple. In 2005 a new temple was built on the old site and the original image returned.
Sthala PuranaTradition
When Sati gave up her life at her father Daksha's sacrifice, Shiva wandered the worlds carrying her body in grief, and Vishnu's discus cut it into pieces. Wherever a part fell, a Shakti Peetha arose. Sati's upper teeth are said to have fallen at Alampur, which counts as the fifth of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The goddess's name is explained as Yogula Amma, mother of the yogis, since she grants yogic powers. Nearby, a small Yellamma shrine recalls Renuka, the mother of Parashurama, who was restored to life.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Jogulamba's fierce image, with creatures of decay on her head, shows the goddess as mistress of death and change: what devotees fear is part of her body.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The return of the goddess to her own temple after 615 years is a striking example of a reclaimed shrine. Alampur's temples, near the Srisailam reservoir, are also a key site for early Chalukya architecture.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
