The hill temple of Khandoba, a warrior form of Shiva and family god of many communities across Maharashtra and the Deccan. Devotees shower one another with turmeric (bhandara), turning the hill yellow.
HistoryDocumented history
About 200 steps lead up to the temple, lined with lamp towers (deepmalas). Khandoba is the family god (kuldaivat) of Marathas, Dhangars, Kolis, Ramoshis and many others, and the Holkars, his devotees, were the main patrons. A huge sword is lifted by devotees in contests on Dussehra.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The demons Mani and Malla terrorised the sages, and Shiva took the form of Martanda Bhairava, riding a horse with his wife, and killed them. Mani asked to be remembered, and a horse-and-rider image of Khandoba with him is worshipped. Khandoba married Mhalsa and later the shepherd girl Banai.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Newly married couples climb to Jejuri to seek Khandoba's blessing, and the groom carries the bride up some of the steps. Vaghyas and Muralis, devotees dedicated to the god, sing his songs.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Khandoba's two wives, one of high caste and one a shepherdess, make him a god who bridges town and pasture, settled and nomadic.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The bhandara festival and Khandoba's songs are central to rural Maharashtrian culture; the old custom of dedicating Muralis has been banned by law.
