Ruined / monumentNagara (North Indian)ASI Monument of National Importance

A tall brick rekha deul standing alone at the edge of the Sundarbans, one of the oldest surviving temples in southern Bengal. It no longer has an image, and its date is still argued over.

HistoryDocumented history

The curved brick tower rises about 30 m, decorated with cut-brick patterns. The land around it was forest until the 19th century, when the Sundarbans were cleared, and the temple was found standing in the jungle. Its name is often linked to the jata (matted hair) of Shiva.

Sthala PuranaTradition

No ancient purana is recorded.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Local people tell of a king who built the temple in a single night, and of treasure hidden beneath it.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A brick tower that has outlasted the forest around it shows how old settled life in the delta really is.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The temple is one of the few dated landmarks for the early history of the Sundarbans, and is a protected monument visited on Sundarbans heritage trips.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
