The water temple of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, on Srirangam island near Tiruchirappalli. Its linga sits over an underground spring and is always partly under water. The goddess Akhilandeswari, said to have been calmed by Adi Shankara, is the temple's other great focus.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple covers about 7 ha with five enclosures. The fifth wall, nearly a kilometre round, is said to have been built by Shiva himself working as a labourer, and it is called the Thiruneetran Thiruchuttru. Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and Vijayanagara inscriptions record its patrons. The sanctum is low, and water from a spring rises around the linga, so priests and pilgrims bow low to enter.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Parvati, sent to earth as a penance, made a linga from the water of the Kaveri under a jambu (rose-apple) tree, and Shiva taught her here. That is why at the noon worship a priest dresses as the goddess and worships the linga.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

An elephant worshipped the linga with water from the river, and a spider built a web over it to keep off falling leaves. Each thought the other was spoiling the shrine; they fought and both died. Shiva freed the elephant, giving the place its name, Thiru-aanai-kaa, 'the sacred elephant grove'. The spider was reborn as King Kochenga, who built temples with sanctum doors too small for any elephant. Adi Shankara is said to have calmed the fierce Akhilandeswari by giving her a pair of Sri Chakra earrings.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Water takes the shape of whatever holds it. The linga under water, and the goddess who worships as a disciple, both speak of humility as the way to the divine.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Next to the great Ranganatha temple, Jambukeswarar shows Shaiva and Vaishnava worship side by side on one river island. Its spring-fed sanctum is a reminder of the Kaveri's central place in Tamil life.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
