Living templeHimalayanClaimed Jyotirlinga sitesASI Monument of National Importance

A valley of more than 100 stone temples in a deodar forest in Kumaon, built between the 7th and 14th centuries and protected by the ASI. Some traditions identify Jageshwar with Darukavana, the deodar forest of the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga story.

HistoryDocumented history

Jageshwar was patronised by Pashupata Shaiva ascetics. Its largest shrines are the Jageshwar temple and the Mahamrityunjaya temple, one of the oldest. Nearby Dandeshwar has a second cluster of temples.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Jageshwar's claim rests on 'Darukavana' meaning a forest of deodar (daru), which fits this valley. Local tradition also connects it to Shiva's long meditation in the forest and to the sages' wives who were drawn to him.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Local tradition credits Adi Shankara with founding or reviving some shrines, though there is no inscription to prove it.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The Mahamrityunjaya temple is linked to the 'great death-conquering' mantra of the Rig Veda, a prayer for release from fear of death.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Jageshwar is a quieter alternative to the crowded Himalayan shrines, and its forest setting is a reminder of how sacred groves have protected India's trees.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
