Living templeVesara / Karnata DravidaHoysalaUNESCO World Heritage Site (part of)ASI Monument of National Importance

A twin Shiva temple in the old Hoysala capital, Dorasamudra, carved in soapstone with friezes of elephants, lions, horsemen and epic scenes. The capital was sacked in the 14th century, and the temple is now part of the UNESCO Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas.

HistoryDocumented history

Halebidu was the Hoysala capital for about two centuries, beside a large tank called Dorasamudra. The temple stands on a high platform; its outer walls carry bands of carving running in parallel lines, with more than 200 large figures of gods above them. The towers over the sanctums were never completed or have not survived.

Sthala PuranaTradition

No separate purana is recorded; the temple is a royal foundation named after the king and his queen.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The Hoysala name is told as the story of Sala, who struck a tiger (or lion) when his teacher cried 'hoy, Sala!' (strike, Sala). The scene of Sala fighting the beast is the dynasty's emblem, carved at Hoysala temples.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The carved bands are read from bottom to top: animals and horsemen, then the epics, then the gods, as if the wall leads the eye from the world to the divine.

Meaning todayInterpretation

UNESCO listing in 2023 brought new attention and visitors. The friezes are a record of 12th-century dress, music, warfare and daily life.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
