ಅನ್ನಪೂರ್ಣೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ, ಹೊರನಾಡು

Rebuilt / restored for worshipDravida (South Indian)

A temple of Annapoorneshwari, the goddess of food, in the Western Ghats of Chikkamagaluru. Every visitor is given meals and a place to rest, in keeping with the goddess's nature as the giver of food.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple grew from a small forest shrine into a pilgrimage centre in the 20th century under its hereditary trustees. It serves free meals all day and offers lodging, and is often visited together with Sringeri, Kalasa and Dharmasthala.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Shiva once said that the world, food included, is illusion. Parvati withdrew and food vanished; when Shiva himself went hungry with a begging bowl, she appeared as Annapoorna and fed him. The image at Horanadu shows her in that form, holding the vessel of plenty.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Devotees say no one who comes to Horanadu leaves hungry. A common offering is rice and a sari for the goddess.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Food is not merely material: in the Upanishads 'annam brahma', food is Brahman. Feeding others becomes worship.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Horanadu shows the temple as a place of hospitality. Its free kitchens serve thousands, an example of food security rooted in faith.
