Living templeKerala

One of Kerala's most visited temples, dedicated to Krishna as Guruvayurappan, a four-armed Vishnu form. It is central to Kerala devotional literature, the Narayaneeyam and Jnanappana, and was the site of the 1931-32 Guruvayur Satyagraha for temple entry.

HistoryDocumented history

Guruvayur is documented from the 16th century, when Melpathur and Poonthanam made it a centre of devotional poetry. The temple was held by the Zamorins of Calicut, and in the 1930s it became a symbol of the temple entry movement. Today it is run by a statutory Devaswom. Non-Hindus are not admitted to the inner temple.

Sthala PuranaTradition

At the end of the Dwapara age, as Dwaraka sank, the image Krishna himself had worshipped was rescued from the waters by Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu, the wind. Guided by Shiva, they installed it beside the Rudratirtha tank, so the place became Guru-Vayu-ur.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Melpathur, crippled by rheumatism, composed one dashaka (ten verses) of the Narayaneeyam each day for 100 days and was cured on the last. Poonthanam's simple Malayalam Jnanappana is said to have pleased the Lord more than learned Sanskrit. The temple elephant Guruvayur Keshavan is remembered for his devotion; his statue stands at the temple.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Guruvayur is a centre of bhakti, where the Lord is approached as a beloved child (Unnikannan). The legend of Poonthanam teaches that sincere devotion matters more than learning or rank.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The Guruvayur Satyagraha is a landmark in India's struggle against caste exclusion. The temple's daily choroonu (first rice-feeding), weddings and the Chembai music festival keep it tied to ordinary life events.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
