The smallest of the Jyotirlinga temples, at Verul next to the Ellora Caves. Destroyed under the Delhi Sultanate and again during the Mughal-Maratha wars, it was restored by Maloji Bhosale, Shivaji's grandfather, and rebuilt in its present form by the Holkars in the 18th century.
HistoryDocumented history
Grishneshwar stands in the Ellora valley, among some of India's greatest rock-cut monuments. Its red-stone temple, with sculpted walls and a large Nandi, reflects 18th-century Maratha rebuilding after centuries of destruction. By local custom, men enter the sanctum bare-chested.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Sudharma and his wife Sudeha had no children, so Sudharma married her younger sister Ghushma, a devoted worshipper of Shiva who immersed 101 clay lingas in a pond each day. When Ghushma bore a son, the jealous Sudeha killed him and threw his body into that pond. Ghushma kept up her worship without despair, and her son rose from the water alive. At her request Shiva forgave Sudeha and stayed here as Ghushmeshwar.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Another explanation of the name says Parvati rubbed saffron on her palms here (ghrishna, 'rubbing'), and Shiva appeared from it.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Ghushma's story is about steady devotion that does not turn to revenge: she asks forgiveness for the one who wronged her. The name is read as 'lord of compassion'.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Grishneshwar and Ellora together show a long, layered religious landscape of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sites within a few kilometres of each other.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation

Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
