A great red sandstone temple built in 1590 by Raja Man Singh of Amber, for the image of Krishna found by Rupa Goswami. Its upper storeys were destroyed in the 17th century and the image was taken to Jaipur, but worship goes on in the old building with a new image.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple is laid out in the shape of a cross, with a high vaulted hall that mixes Hindu and Mughal building methods. Contemporary sources say it was the largest temple of north India in its time, seven storeys high. What remains is the lower part of the hall and sanctum, still impressive in scale.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Rupa Goswami, disciple of Chaitanya, was led by a cow to a mound where she poured her milk; digging there, he found the image of Govinda that, by tradition, Krishna's great-grandson Vajranabha had installed.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Local tradition says the lamps on the top storey were so bright that the emperor Aurangzeb saw them from Agra and ordered the temple destroyed.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The Goswamis taught that Krishna is the supreme God whose sweetness (madhurya) is greater than his majesty; Govinda is the cowherd god of love.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple is a key monument of Mughal-era architecture, and its link with Jaipur's Govind Dev Ji temple keeps the two cities joined.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
