HistoryDocumented history

Gogaji, also called Goga Pir or Jaharveer, is one of the great folk gods of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and the upper Ganga plain. By tradition he was a Chauhan Rajput chief of Dadrewa, near Churu, who fought and died defending his people, perhaps in the 11th century, and is worshipped as a protector from snakes and snakebite.

His samadhi at Gogamedi, in Nohar tehsil of Hanumangarh district, is the main centre of his worship. The present building, with domes and minaret-like towers, was rebuilt in 1911 by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner. The shrine is served by both Hindu and Muslim custodians, and pilgrims of both faiths come to it, especially for the great fair in Bhadrapada.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The shrine is a white building in a mixed Rajput and Islamic style, with a dome over the samadhi and towers at the corners. Inside is an image of Gogaji on horseback, with a snake.

A large fair ground surrounds the shrine, and a pond lies nearby.

Stories and local loreTradition and folklore

Gogaji is said to have disappeared into the earth riding his blue horse, and he is shown on horseback with a snake. Many villages of Rajasthan keep a small Goga shrine, a stone with a carved snake.
