A cave temple of Shiva in the heart of Bengaluru, developed by the city's founder Kempe Gowda I. On Makara Sankranti the setting sun shines through a window, between the horns of the Nandi, onto the linga.

HistoryDocumented history

Kempe Gowda I, a chief under the Vijayanagara kings, founded Bengaluru in 1537. Tradition says he was imprisoned by the emperor for minting his own coins, and on his release he enlarged this cave temple. In the courtyard stand two huge stone discs, for the sun and moon, and pillars with a trident and a drum.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The linga is linked to Gangadhara, Shiva who caught the falling Ganga in his hair. A passage in the cave is said in local legend to run to Kashi.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

On Makara Sankranti (14 or 15 January) the evening sun passes between the horns of the Nandi and lights the linga for a few minutes, an event broadcast live by Kannada television.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The solar alignment ties Shiva to the sun's turn north (uttarayana), a time of new beginnings.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The alignment interests astronomers as well as devotees. Late 18th-century paintings by Thomas and William Daniell show the temple, letting historians compare its old and present form.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
