Living templeDravida (South Indian)CholaUNESCO World Heritage Site (part of)ASI Monument of National Importance

The great Shiva temple of the city that Rajendra I built as his capital after his armies reached the Ganges. Its vimana, about 55 m high with gently curving sides, is a counterpart to his father's temple at Thanjavur. It is part of the UNESCO site 'Great Living Chola Temples'.

HistoryDocumented history

Rajendra I (r. 1014-1044) took the title Gangaikonda Chola, 'the Chola who took the Ganges', after his armies marched north to Bengal. He founded a new capital and built this temple, finished around 1035. The vimana is a little lower than Thanjavur's, but its curved profile is often thought more graceful. Its bronzes and sculptures, such as Shiva crowning the saint Chandesha, are among the finest Chola work. The city vanished after the Chola collapse, and in 1836 stone from the temple walls was used for a British dam.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The temple's story is royal rather than mythic. Tradition says Rajendra asked the kings he defeated in the north to carry Ganges water to his capital, so that the river itself would honour the Chola Shiva.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

A huge stone lion near the tank, with a well inside it, is said to have held Ganges water. Local people say a hidden tunnel once linked the palace to the temple.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The image of Shiva placing a garland on the devoted Chandesha shows the god honouring the devotee; Chola art often reverses the usual order of worship in this way.

Meaning todayInterpretation

A once-forgotten royal capital is now a quiet village around one of India's great monuments. The annual Rajendra Chola festival and recent excavations of the palace site are bringing the city back to public memory.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
