A Divya Desam on the Kaveri where Vishnu is said to have saved the elephant king Gajendra from a crocodile. It is one of the Pancha Krishnaranya shrines.

The elephant Gajendra was seized by a crocodile while gathering lotuses. When his strength failed he cried out to Vishnu, offering a single lotus, and Vishnu came at once on Garuda and freed him. Hanuman (kapi) also worshipped here, giving the village its name.

தாமரை பறிக்கும்போது யானை கஜேந்திரனை முதலை பற்றியது. வலிமை குன்றியதும் அவன் ஒரு தாமரையைச் சமர்ப்பித்து விஷ்ணுவை அழைத்தான்; விஷ்ணு உடனே கருடன் மேல் வந்து அவனை விடுவித்தார். அனுமனும் (கபி) இங்கு வழிபட்டதால் ஊர் இப்பெயர் பெற்றது.
