The largest temple in Kanchipuram, where Shiva is worshipped as a linga of earth (Prithvi Lingam), one of the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams. An ancient mango tree in its courtyard marks where Parvati is said to have worshipped him and won him in marriage.
HistoryDocumented history
Ekambareswarar spreads over about 9 ha in the north of Kanchipuram, with five enclosures and a thousand-pillared hall. Its core is old: the Tevaram poets Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar sang of it in the 7th to 9th centuries. The Cholas rebuilt it, and in 1509 Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara added the great southern gateway tower. A corridor holds 1,008 small lingas. Inside the temple's first enclosure is a small Vishnu shrine, Nilathingal Thundathan, sung by Thirumangai Alvar and counted among the 108 Divya Desams; a Shiva temple holding a Divya Desam is very rare.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Parvati once covered Shiva's eyes in play, and the worlds fell into darkness. To atone she came to Kanchi and made a linga of sand under a mango tree by the Vegavati river. Shiva sent a flood to test her, and she held the linga in her arms to save it. Pleased, he appeared and married her. The linga of sand is the Prithvi Lingam, worshipped with oil rather than water.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The sacred mango tree is said to bear fruit of four different tastes on its four branches, standing for the four Vedas. Sundarar is said to have regained the sight of his left eye by singing here.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Earth is the element of patience and support. The story of a linga made from sand, held together only by devotion, shows that the sacred is made, not found, through steady care.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple is the city's largest and the centre of Kanchi's great Panguni Uthiram festival. Its old mango tree, now preserved as a stump with a new tree grown from it, is visited by couples praying for a good marriage.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation

Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
