An apsidal Chalukya temple ringed by a pillared gallery, the best known of more than a hundred temples at Aihole, often called a cradle of Indian temple architecture. The name comes from a nearby fort (durga), not from the goddess.
HistoryDocumented history
Aihole was an early Chalukya centre where builders tried many forms of temple side by side. The Durga temple's horseshoe plan recalls Buddhist chaitya halls, and its walls carry fine panels of Narasimha, Varaha, Shiva with Nandi and Mahishasuramardini. The Meguti Jain temple nearby holds the Aihole inscription of 634 by the poet Ravikirti, praising Pulakeshin II.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Aihole is linked in local tradition to Parashurama, who is said to have washed his axe in the Malaprabha after killing the kshatriyas, turning the river red.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Village women are said to have cried 'Ayyo, hole!' ('oh, the river!') on seeing the red water, which is told as the origin of the name Aihole.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Its varied images under one roof, Vishnu, Shiva and the goddess, show the Chalukya habit of honouring several deities in one place.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Aihole is a laboratory of temple design and is part of the Badami-Aihole-Pattadakal circuit, which is on UNESCO's tentative list in addition to Pattadakal's listing.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
