Living temple

A great prayer hall (namghar) of the Ekasarana Vaishnava faith near Jorhat, said to have been founded by Madhavdeva, the chief disciple of Sankardev. An oil lamp is said to have burned in it without going out since it was founded.

HistoryDocumented history

The name comes from dhekia, a fern: an old woman who gave Madhavdeva shelter is said to have had only dhekia leaves to cook for him. The namghar is one of the most important in Upper Assam, and its lamp is said to have been kept burning for nearly five centuries.

Sthala PuranaTradition

No ancient purana is recorded.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

A poor woman fed Madhavdeva a meal of dhekia ferns, and he blessed the village and founded the namghar there.

PhilosophyInterpretation

In the Ekasarana faith God is worshipped through his name and his scripture, not an image, and a humble offering is as dear as a rich one.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Dhekiakhowa is a living centre of Assamese Vaishnava culture, with nam-kirtan and Bhaona performances.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
