Naimisharanya

The sacred forest on the Gomti where, in the Puranas, the sage Suta recited the epics and Puranas to the assembled rishis. In the Divya Desam tradition Vishnu is present here as the forest itself.

HistoryDocumented history

Naimisharanya, today the small town of Nimsar in Sitapur district, is named in the Mahabharata and many Puranas as the forest where the sages under Shaunaka held a long sacrifice and heard the sacred stories. Thirumangai Alvar sang of it, and Sri Vaishnavas hold that Vishnu dwells here as the forest. Pilgrims visit the Chakra Tirtha tank, the Vyasa Gaddi under an old banyan, the hill of Hanuman Garhi, and the Lalita Devi temple.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Brahma released a wheel (nemi) and told the sages to settle where it stopped; it fell here, and the spring that rose became the Chakra Tirtha. The place is therefore called Naimisha, the forest of the wheel's rim.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The sage Dadhichi is said to have given his bones here so that the gods could make the thunderbolt to kill the demon Vritra, and the nearby town of Misrikh is linked with his gift.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Worshipping the forest as the god turns a whole landscape into a shrine: every tree and spring is part of Vishnu's body.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Pilgrims make the 84-kos parikrama of Naimisharanya in Phalguna, and the town remains a centre for the public recitation of the Puranas.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
