One of the earliest surviving stone temples of north India, built in the Gupta period around 500 CE. Its relief panels of Vishnu lying on the serpent, Gajendra being saved, and the sages Nara and Narayana are masterpieces of Gupta art.

The temple stands on a raised platform with steps on all sides, and was built on the panchayatana plan with four small shrines at the corners. Its spire, now mostly lost, was one of the first curved Nagara towers. The doorway is carved with river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna.

No purana is recorded for the temple. Its panels show Vishnu as Anantashayana, the rescue of the elephant Gajendra, and Nara-Narayana doing penance at Badrinath.
