The temple of Krishna as Ranchhodrai, 'the one who left the battlefield', whose image is said to have been brought from Dwarka by a devotee. It is the chief Krishna temple of central Gujarat and is crowded on full-moon days.
HistoryDocumented history
Dakor was a Shaiva site, Danka Nath, before the Krishna image came. The present temple, with eight domes and a gilded spire, was built in 1772 with Maratha funding. Pilgrims walk to Dakor from Ahmedabad and elsewhere for the full moon of Phalgun (Holi).
Sthala PuranaTradition
Krishna is called Ranchhod because he left the battlefield (ran chhod) at Mathura to save his people, moving to Dwarka. At Dakor he chose to leave Dwarka too, for love of a devotee.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The old devotee Bodana walked from Dakor to Dwarka twice a year until he could no longer travel. Krishna then came to Dakor in his cart. When the Dwarka priests demanded the image back, they agreed to take its weight in gold; Bodana's wife Gangabai had only a gold nose-ring, and it balanced the scale.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The nose-ring that outweighs a god shows that devotion, not wealth, is the true measure.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The Holi full-moon walk to Dakor is one of Gujarat's largest pilgrimages, with volunteer camps along the roads.
